The project

MAR Marine and Building Contracting L.L.C is delivering the New Quay Wall Design and Construction Works at East Wharf, Jebel Ali, for DP World under a fast-track Design & Build contract. The project replaces a 45-year-old sheet pile quay wall that had suffered over 60% section loss with a modern structure engineered for a 50-year service life in accordance with BS 6349, ASTM, CIRIA and SPM standards.

The works comprise a sheet pile quay wall with concrete infill, a ground anchor system, cast-in-situ and precast reinforced-concrete capping beam, quay furniture, dredging, revetment and apron reinstatement. MAR is responsible for engineering, procurement, construction, testing and commissioning, with the works coordinated to minimise disruption to ongoing port operations.

Delivery is coordinated with DP World’s Marine Operations, Engineering and HSE departments and the required authority approvals. Marine safety controls, daily toolbox talks, gas and lighting monitoring, and heat-stress monitoring support site operations.

Scope of work

  • Design and construction of a new 425 m quay wall at an 8.7 m draft at East Wharf, intended to replace the existing 45-year-old sheet pile quay wall
  • Dredging to a final seabed level of -8.5 m DMD, with silt-curtain and turbidity control
  • Installation and driving of 303 sheet piles to design level, with approximately 2,752 m³ of concrete infill
  • Ground anchor system: assembly, drilling, installation, grouting and pre-stressing of 153 anchors
  • 425 m cast-in-situ reinforced-concrete capping beam cast in 28 m increments, together with 46 precast capping-beam panels
  • Supply and installation of 31 bollards rated at 80 tonnes each, together with shear studs
  • Backfilling, rock revetment and anti-scour protection works
  • Apron reinstatement and integration of existing tanker-berth facilities, firefighting systems and MEP utilities for ENOC / EMARAT
  • Design documentation and authority approvals (NOCs)
