The project

MAR – Construção Civil e Obras Públicas, Lda. is the EPC contractor for the modernisation of the Unicargas Multipurpose Terminal, also known as Noatum Ports Luanda Terminal, at the Port of Luanda on Angola’s northern Atlantic coast. Developed for ADPG Luanda, part of AD Ports Group (Abu Dhabi Ports Group), the overall development combines marine works and topside scope. The marine package includes a new deep-draft STS container quay wall and basin to accommodate Super-Post-Panamax vessels, MHC General Cargo/Ro-Ro berth works, a modernised quay wall structure with a deep anchor wall, a berth-pocket submerged retaining wall and anti-scour protection. STS crane rails and a cable protection system, together with quay wall furniture, bunkering, cold ironing and data connectivity facilities, support containerised, reefer, general cargo and vehicle import/export operations, strengthening ADP’s regional position as operator of Angola’s first deep-draft STS and RTG pavement terminal.

Scope of work

  • Overall Noatum Ports Luanda Terminal development area: 192,000 m²; the marine package comprises two berths for Ro-Ro and container vessels
  • Design and construction of a new 396 m STS container quay wall, with the basin dredged to −16.00 m LAT to accommodate Super-Post-Panamax vessels
  • Design and construction of 138 m MHC General Cargo/Ro-Ro berth, maintaining the existing seabed depth at −9.00 m LAT
  • Demolition of redundant quay wall structures
  • Reinforced-concrete capping beam and tie-rod anchor system
  • New berth-pocket submerged retaining wall and anti-scour protection
  • Ship-to-Shore crane rails and cable protection system plus marine furniture, bollards, high-performance cone fenders and safety ladders
  • Cold ironing and bunkering facilities coordinated with the pavement topside infrastructure package
